From Biology to Clinical Practice

with Trisha O'Hehir RDH, BS

The mouth is the doorway to the body. Scientific research provides evidence of the dynamic and toxic nature of bacterial biofilm relating to pH changes in the mouth and gingival bleeding. Understanding the latest findings on caries, periodontal disease, products and instruments creates a foundation for effective treatment and prevention.

The significance and extent of new research on xylitol, oral antioxidants, oral probiotics, novel instrument designs and marketing strategies provides participants with the tools and science necessary to significantly improve the oral health of their patients.

Following this course participants will be able to:
  • Understand the dynamic nature of
    oral bacterial biofilm
  • Describe the impact of oral pH changes on the initiation of caries
  • Explain how cytokines trigger bleeding on probing
  • Understand the science and clinical significance of xylitol research
  • Appreciate the benefits of predictable daily toothbrushing
  • Understand the differences between nose and mouth breathing
  • Choose preventive strategies based on scientific evidence
  • Integrate novel instrument designs into debridement procedures
  • Integrate emerging products into clinical
